MRI - Cross Training

Well I had a Dr. visit last week that turned into a MRI visit later in the week.

The results from the MRI didn't show enough of a meniscus tear to warrant a surgery. The Dr. said there is a small tear but didn't want to do a surgery. He did say that the bone in the area was injured (inside of my right knee). So he suggested a steroid shot to speed up the healing process. Also he is going to prescribe some anti-inflammatory meds. He is hoping that it will heal on it's own. He did mention that if in about a months time it hasn't gotten any better that we may have to consider a surgery of some type.

So for now no running. He didn't say for how long. I had already stopped running. I tried last Thursday but I was in so much pain after I stopped that there is no way I can continue for now.

I can do biking and elliptical. So I have biked the last couple of days. At work, Dynetics, we have a fitness center. I'm going to start using that 3-4 days a week. We have all kinds of machinery in there I can use for low-impact stuff.

I go today for my injection. Maybe somebody will tell me how long to stay off of running. If not I have a goal of trying to start back June 6th (if not sooner). Until then I'm going to be tearing up some bicycling and elliptical.

The Dr. also wanted me to do some physical therapy. I don't know how other people feel about it but I'm not a big fan of it. The only reason is that I'm an athletic person. I know what it takes to get where I'm going. I can research the internet to find good exercises to help with my situation. I may go for one visit to see what they'll have me doing.

BTW - The reason the bone is injured and probably the reason for the meniscus problem was from what happened on my last hiking trip. I hit the same area of my knee twice within a few hour period. The second hit was the worst and I believe probably caused my problem. I'm not clumsy. Stuff just happens out on the trail that you just can't expect.

Happy Biking!

UPDATE - Went to the Dr. visit. They said 6 weeks of no running. How about that? I missed it by 1 day.

Ouch the Knee!

I ran into Lanier fairly early in the run today so I turned around and finished my run with him. That was a HUGE help. My knee felt terrible from the start. Having somebody to run with helped pass the time and keep my mind off the pain. I ended up running about 5 miles. I don't think there was any way I could have ran the 6.

After the run the knee felt awful. It was bad enough that it made the decision easy to make a Dr. appointment as soon as I got home. That appt. is Monday morning. I hope that it is nothing serious. I've come to far to be thrown backwards. Frustrating!

Another routine day

Off on another schedule starting today. I don't really have any goals currently in mind. I just want to keep improving, pretty simple. I started this half-marathon schedule because I think it's doable.

Next race is the Steeplechase 8k May 1st in Decatur. I'm not sure I can run that distance with any kind of speed. I will probably run close to 8:00 miles (or at least try). I don't have another race after that for the near term.

Chick-Fil-A follow up: Mentally my goal was 22:30 so I'm really happy with the 21:58. All week leading up to the race I had not felt very strong. My legs had been stiff and achy. I had not slept very well. With those things in mind my confidence was really tanking towards the end of the week. The morning of the race I was having some plumbing problems (nicest way I know how to say it) and I thought the race was shot for sure. I had to dig around the house and finally found some Imodium that was 4 years out of date. That calmed and I felt great during the race. Probably the best I've felt over the first 2 miles of a race.

Since race day I've ran 6.5 miles and cut two yards. Needless to say I'm dead tired today. My short 4 miles seemed more like 8. I almost stopped at 2.5 but I forced myself to keep going.

We must be nuts to put our bodies through this torture.

Chick-Fil-A 5k

What an AWESOME day for a race! The weather could not have been any better. I think I heard that there was 466 participants. The course is a really good course. The only downside is that traffic on a couple of spots could have been controlled just a little better (Hobbs Street).

I really did not hear any word about we were ready to start. I heard a cow bell and everybody started running. The PA speakers were pointed off in the other directions and you couldn't hear a word being said from our position on the road.

I didn't want to take a position at the front of the line out of respect for those folks that can really run. There were quite a number of young boys that were up front.

So the bell rung and off we went. Those young boys that were up front, they took off FAST and they faded just as fast. After about the first 1/4 that were already dropping like flies. I had in mind 2 people to try to keep in my sites. I found them and staid on the heels of the one guy. When we were getting close to the first mile marker I noticed his breathing was really labored. I felt really good and really comfortable, even at the pace I was currently running. First mile, 6:47. Way too fast but again I felt really good.

Just before the first mile marker I started leaving behind the person I was wanting to shadow. I just felt strong and I thought I had it in me to keep the current pace. Going down Hobbs Street there is a slight downhill. I turned up the juice just a bit while I had that short downhill. That may not have been smart but I went for it anyways. Again, just after the turn onto Market Street there is a slight downhill. I turned it on again. There was a man counting out the positions right in front of the Dr.'s Plaza. That was something I hadn't encountered in any race. I was currently in 20th position. That was kind of neat to hear.

The second mile was right in front of the hospital, 6:54. That wasn't too bad of a drop from the first mile. I'll take a 7 second difference. This is where I started feeling the quick first mile pace. From the hospital to Houston Street there is a slight incline. It's a bit tougher than you would expect. We rounded the square and that is where I got passed for the first time (the guy that came in 3rd in my age group). I was starting to hurt but I knew there was a downhill before the last climb into the finish.

During that final climb I got passed by a lady that is older than me and a man that is older. Into the the last 1/10th I got passed by a couple more folks. I had no kick or maybe I didn't have the will to kick.

Anyways, officially 21:58, I had 21:56.90 (what's 1 second). My third mile was not so good. The last 1.1 was 8:14 (7:30 avg).

I just knew I had a chance for the top 3 in my age group. Eric was there so I knew that was one position. The official age group results has me at 8th in the 31-40 age group. The neat part is that positions 3-8, in that age group, all finished between 21:48 and 21:58. If I could have worked up any kick things might have been entirely different for me.

I'm happy with 25th overall and I beat my previous PR by 1:09.

Some more 400s

BLOG'g has been a feast or famine for me. I go through this quite often. I do this at work also. I'll want to write everything down so that I can recall things later. I'll do that very well for a month or two and then it just goes away.

I've been a bit worried about my knee. The more I think about what happened on the hiking trip the more I believe that I must have twisted it really hard when I slipped on that rock. I've iced it about 4 times a day since Sunday. I've taken Vitamin I(buprofen) at least 3 times a day since Saturday. Before the run today it has felt really good. During the run it felt OK but just like last week I really started feeling it after the run. It didn't feel as bad but the feeling was still there.

The times:

  1. 1:37.06
  2. 1:37.60
  3. 1:38.00
  4. 1:37.20
  5. 1:40.68
  6. 1:42.27
The reason I put the milliseconds is that I thought it strange just how close/consistent the first 4 were. The last two I purposefully slowed down to try to match the pace I want to run in the Chick-Fil-A 5k this coming Saturday (April 10th).
