What an AWESOME day for a race! The weather could not have been any better. I think I heard that there was 466 participants. The course is a really good course. The only downside is that traffic on a couple of spots could have been controlled just a little better (Hobbs Street).
I really did not hear any word about we were ready to start. I heard a cow bell and everybody started running. The PA speakers were pointed off in the other directions and you couldn't hear a word being said from our position on the road.
I didn't want to take a position at the front of the line out of respect for those folks that can really run. There were quite a number of young boys that were up front.
So the bell rung and off we went. Those young boys that were up front, they took off FAST and they faded just as fast. After about the first 1/4 that were already dropping like flies. I had in mind 2 people to try to keep in my sites. I found them and staid on the heels of the one guy. When we were getting close to the first mile marker I noticed his breathing was really labored. I felt really good and really comfortable, even at the pace I was currently running. First mile, 6:47. Way too fast but again I felt really good.
Just before the first mile marker I started leaving behind the person I was wanting to shadow. I just felt strong and I thought I had it in me to keep the current pace. Going down Hobbs Street there is a slight downhill. I turned up the juice just a bit while I had that short downhill. That may not have been smart but I went for it anyways. Again, just after the turn onto Market Street there is a slight downhill. I turned it on again. There was a man counting out the positions right in front of the Dr.'s Plaza. That was something I hadn't encountered in any race. I was currently in 20th position. That was kind of neat to hear.
The second mile was right in front of the hospital, 6:54. That wasn't too bad of a drop from the first mile. I'll take a 7 second difference. This is where I started feeling the quick first mile pace. From the hospital to Houston Street there is a slight incline. It's a bit tougher than you would expect. We rounded the square and that is where I got passed for the first time (the guy that came in 3rd in my age group). I was starting to hurt but I knew there was a downhill before the last climb into the finish.
During that final climb I got passed by a lady that is older than me and a man that is older. Into the the last 1/10th I got passed by a couple more folks. I had no kick or maybe I didn't have the will to kick.
Anyways, officially 21:58, I had 21:56.90 (what's 1 second). My third mile was not so good. The last 1.1 was 8:14 (7:30 avg).
I just knew I had a chance for the top 3 in my age group. Eric was there so I knew that was one position. The official age group results has me at 8th in the 31-40 age group. The neat part is that positions 3-8, in that age group, all finished between 21:48 and 21:58. If I could have worked up any kick things might have been entirely different for me.
I'm happy with 25th overall and I beat my previous PR by 1:09.

Rudolf Run 5k - 23:15
The race timer had me at 23:19. Not sure why the difference.
I was hoping for one more PR for this year but it didn't happen. I'm not sure why I couldn't get lower. One thing I am glad of with this race was more consisten splits.
Turned out to be a good race. I was hurting a little at the end. I had no kick for the final tenth.
UPDATE 12/20:
I was 86 of 861 overall and 4 of 30 in my age group.

Frosty Freeze 5k (how appropriate)
This race was in Decatur, AL and started at the First Baptist church on Church Street.
It was cold. It was 30-32 at the start of the race which was 8am. The wind chill had to be close to 20 (I'm guessing, I have no idea). On top of that we had a snow fall during the night of about 1 inch. Not much on the roadways, just on the bridges. There was one accident on the bridge going into Decatur. I was worried for a minute that I was going to make it by race time. Anyways, IT WAS COLD.
The race started quickly for me. I've started all my races too fast but this one was faster than the others. I knew it was too fast and I was telling myself to calm down and slow down. I did an OK job of getting under control but I might have put out too much (and paid for it later in the race).
Here are my splits:
I did have my best time yet of 23:07 but I feel I could have done better. The last couple of weeks my eating habits have been poor. My training has been steady. I did miss a couple days last week but I've staid with my schedule.
During the first 1.5 miles I was right with one man. He had a good steady pace and good breathing habits. I was wanting to stay with him but there was this one pretty good hill. That hill just beat me down. About this same time a lady passed us both by. She must have done a better job of holding back on the first mile because she just went past me and kept going. After this hill I just didn't feel good the rest of the way. That man left me behind and I couldn't keep up.
Coming up to the finish line is an uphill. The uphill is probably 500 yards and just before the finish it flattens out for about 75 yards. As I was getting close to the finish I saw 22 on the clock and thought if I could just kick a bit I would have a sub-23. I didn't have it. If coming up to the finish there wasn't that hill I might could have but the race isn't laid out the way I want.
Recently my training has begun to bore me just a bit. I'm not sure what I need to do to get it going in the right direction again. I might have to start carrying a music player (which I have staid away from purposely). The schedule I've been following has mostly the same runs during each week for several weeks. I probably need to find a schedule that has more variety.
Anyways, the race time for today was better than the last. Good for me. I'm hoping to keep improving.
I didn't stay around for race results (way too cold to hang around). I hope they will be posted later today (Decatur Track Club).

Liz Hurley 5k - 23:45
Nice day for a race (although it did start raining at about 30 minutes into the ladies race). About 45 at start time. I thought I might get a bit cold but did not. About half way into the race I was pretty hot.
My personal best. I couldn't have done any better. I had no kick at the end so I guess that tells me that I was letting it go during the race.
First off, I have to remember to get closer to the start line. By no means I'm I going to be winning a race but in this race I got stuck behind a lot of folks. I had to do quite a bit of weaving and short sprints between folks. That probably took some out of me. My time might have been just a bit better but only by seconds. (I have my time from start line to finish line as 23:34 - the shoe timers start as soon as they say go - so I was about 14 seconds deep in the crowd)
I told Genoa that the race really seemed to go by quick in relative terms. The other races I've ran I would think it's never going to end.
Official Results - #117 out of 515 - 23:45
The thing I feel best about was that during the race I kept passing people. I only got passed just a few times. I was gaining while most folks were falling back (or something like that).
That is a really nice running course. The last hill is kind of tough but very doable. I thought just after the race that it wasn't bad at all (the hill). The last straight-a-way is really nice to have a the end of a race. I gave it all I could down that stretch.
I'm also glad that in my 3 races so far I've gotten better each time: 25:06, 24:23, and now 23:45.
I think the next race might be the Rudolf Run on Dec 19th.
UPDATE 6:40pm - I'm fairly certain I left it all on the course this morning. My legs are sore. They hardly ever get sore.

HUMID!
I had a tough time today with my short 4 miles (37:43). I'm still recovering from the Saturday race and the 6 miler on Sunday. My legs felt like I was dragging trees along with me.
Whew - the humidity had to be 100%. That makes it even tougher @ 3pm. I was hoping it would rain during the day to help cool it down but it didn't.
On the Duck Run race from Saturday, the results were posted in the Athens News Courier today.

Duck Run 5k - Met my goal (and got a prize)
My goal for this race was less than the previous race time (25:06). I was certain I could go under but wasn't sure how far. That also depended on how I felt this morning.
On Wednesday I had ran some really fast 440s (too fast) and I could still feel it my legs early on in the race. After a bit it smoothed out and I didn't feel the soreness.
The race started really quick. A lot of people were running way too hard down the first stretch (East street). Some folks were already breathing really heavy. I could hear that and compare it to my breathing and I felt fairly good. I wasn't breathing quite as hard, yet. I could also tell that I was running way too quick.
At the first mile the person called out 7:10. I have 7:16 so I'm not sure how there could be such a difference. I heard that time and was surprised. I was also concerned that I might have burnt a bit too much energy.
Here are all the mile splits:
We hung around to hear all the placements announced. I was standing there talking to Eric and he said to me "Oh by the way, you came in first in your age group. Did you know that?" I was totally shocked that I would have come in first place, especially in my age group. My age group, 35-39, is still young enough for us guys to have a little bit of athleticism left and a whole let of competitive fire.
So hey, a bonus - I met my goal and I got a winners trophy (small but really nice picture frame).
Will look for pictures and results at the official web site later.
UPDATE: OK, the results have been posted and it has my time at 24:23. Hey, even better for me.

Sunset Run - My First 5k
Overall I think I did really well. My goal was to beat 25:56. That is what I had ran 2 days prior to the race. My time was 25:06. I haven't seen the official results. That is what a friend of Genoa's told her. I didn't get the time at the end. I was more concerned with getting across the line. I didn't even think to look up at the clock. Also, my watch battery died during the race.
Here are the overall race results and by age groups.
My first mile was 7:44. When I saw that I knew I had went out too fast. The second mile time was 15:55. So that would be 8:11 for the 2nd mile. Not a big a jump, 27 seconds. I didn't realize I slowed so much that last mile and 1/10. That time was 9:51. For my first race I'll just accept that final section and try to do better next time.
This being my first race I found it very interesting. All the cool runners up front all with their shirts off (egos). Female runners all tanned up with their skin tight shorties. I understand feeling good about yourself but hey, does everybody have to see everything?
Most of the crowd started off running way too fast. I just sort of hung towards the back to determine how things were going. After about 2 or 3/10 I started moving up through the crowd. That is why my first mile was so fast. I think I passed half the crowd during this time.
During the majority of the race a couple of men staid right with me. One older and the other about my age. The one guy about my age kept trying to push ahead of me. He finally fell back.
That last section of the race was a long gentle incline. I had to slow down and was huffing quite a bit on that.
Toward the end, when I could see the clock, I started a kick. I surprised myself with the kick I had at the end. Made me wonder if I could have had a better pace during portions of the race.
Regardless of where I came in the standings, I'm very pleased.
This Friday evening 8pm start sort of threw me off schedule. Friday's have been my off days. No early Saturday morning run this week.
