Cold wind but a good run

I started my run and I thought that my shorts and one thin shirt was not going to but enough. After running 5-10 minutes I warmed up really well. The wind was still really strong and cold. The wind was so strong going west on West Hobbs I thought I was standing still.

Today I had 6 miles. I ended up running 6.2. The time was 48:16. What? I had to look at my watch twice. That was a really fast run for that distance. That wasn't intentional. I think it had a lot to do with the cold wind. I just wanted to get home.

Great day for a run. The wind was cold but the sun was shining bright (something we've had very little of over the last month).

Another schedule started

This BLOG has been pretty quiet over the last month or so. I do that. I go in spurts where I want to and times when I don't.

I'm continuing to run. I've started a new running schedule this week (see the upper right link). This is another schedule I copied from coolrunning.com. This one seems a bit on the aggressive side for somebody that has been running for 6 months. The schedule has a long run on every Friday and Sunday. My schedules before I've had Fridays off. I thought if I were going to improve I should push myself. I'll be able to tell after the first month if this was too much too soon.

This week I've had some fun runs. On Wednesday I ran the rails-to-trails north from the Elkmont parking a round-trip of 5 miles (to the covered bridge and back). My bro-in-law Scott ran with me. We had three one minute sprints and two 30 second sprints during this run. That was a really tough run.

On Friday, yes Christmas day, I went back to the same place for a 6 mile round-trip run. Right before the covered bridge there is a mile marker that says 8.0. I thought if I make it to the 8.5 marker that will make the correct round-trip mileage of 6. Well I kept running thinking the marker would come up. The next marker I came to said 3.0. I just love consistancy. I'm not exactly sure how long my run was. I'm just going to say it was 6.0. I had a really good rythm on the way back. So much so that I zoned out for about a mile. My thighs started getting tight in the last mile.

Today I had a short 3 miles to run. I had trouble getting my breathing under control. That might have had a lot to do with the 20oz Mtn Dew and two Clif bars I had for lunch.

Rudolf Run 5k - 23:15

The race timer had me at 23:19. Not sure why the difference.

I was hoping for one more PR for this year but it didn't happen. I'm not sure why I couldn't get lower. One thing I am glad of with this race was more consisten splits.

  1. 7:26
  2. 7:27
  3. 7:33
  4. 0:47
I didn't not want to go out too fast and I didn't. While running that first mile I kept thinking that I was running too slow.

Turned out to be a good race. I was hurting a little at the end. I had no kick for the final tenth.

UPDATE 12/20:
I was 86 of 861 overall and 4 of 30 in my age group.

Frosty Freeze 5k (how appropriate)

This race was in Decatur, AL and started at the First Baptist church on Church Street.

It was cold. It was 30-32 at the start of the race which was 8am. The wind chill had to be close to 20 (I'm guessing, I have no idea). On top of that we had a snow fall during the night of about 1 inch. Not much on the roadways, just on the bridges. There was one accident on the bridge going into Decatur. I was worried for a minute that I was going to make it by race time. Anyways, IT WAS COLD.

The race started quickly for me. I've started all my races too fast but this one was faster than the others. I knew it was too fast and I was telling myself to calm down and slow down. I did an OK job of getting under control but I might have put out too much (and paid for it later in the race).

Here are my splits:
  1. 6:59 (my fastest mile to date)
  2. 7:40
  3. 8:27 (23:07)
As you can see that is way to inconsistent. The first mile was too fast and the 2nd mile was too slow. I was hoping to be a more consistent 7:30 but it didn't work that way. I've got to figure out how to have more consistent times.

I did have my best time yet of 23:07 but I feel I could have done better. The last couple of weeks my eating habits have been poor. My training has been steady. I did miss a couple days last week but I've staid with my schedule.

During the first 1.5 miles I was right with one man. He had a good steady pace and good breathing habits. I was wanting to stay with him but there was this one pretty good hill. That hill just beat me down. About this same time a lady passed us both by. She must have done a better job of holding back on the first mile because she just went past me and kept going. After this hill I just didn't feel good the rest of the way. That man left me behind and I couldn't keep up.

Coming up to the finish line is an uphill. The uphill is probably 500 yards and just before the finish it flattens out for about 75 yards. As I was getting close to the finish I saw 22 on the clock and thought if I could just kick a bit I would have a sub-23. I didn't have it. If coming up to the finish there wasn't that hill I might could have but the race isn't laid out the way I want.

Recently my training has begun to bore me just a bit. I'm not sure what I need to do to get it going in the right direction again. I might have to start carrying a music player (which I have staid away from purposely). The schedule I've been following has mostly the same runs during each week for several weeks. I probably need to find a schedule that has more variety.

Anyways, the race time for today was better than the last. Good for me. I'm hoping to keep improving.

I didn't stay around for race results (way too cold to hang around). I hope they will be posted later today (Decatur Track Club).
