7x440

I'm sort of just trying to figure out what I want to do next right now. I really like following a schedule because it gives me something to check off but right now I'm not on any schedule. I want to wait to start a new one until after the Chick-Fil-A 5k. So right now I'm just doing the last couple of weeks of the previous schedule.

On Tuesday I was supposed to do 8x440s but I was just too tired to get the last one. Maybe it wasn't tiredness but more like not having the will.

  1. 1:32
  2. 1:26
  3. 1:30
  4. 1:34
  5. 1:39
  6. 1:34
  7. 1:37
I found these extremely difficult today. I've been so tired recently. I just can't get enough sleep. Seemed like I woke up every hour or so the night before. I may just have to take a day off work to try to rest and sleep in for once.

End of another training schedule

When I started this 12 week schedule back in December I thought it was going to be a bit aggressive for me. I was thinking that it would hit me hard after about the 4th week. That turned out not to be true, it wasn't until the 8th week. Some of those runs got pretty hard for me. I wasn't sure I could do the distances. I wasn't sure I could run 6 days a week. I had 2 long days, Friday and Sunday, I was unsure about that. All the unknowns were just from a basic lack of confidence and the unknown of never doing this before.

Now that I've made it through I look back and think about the days I was very tired and sore and think "hey, that wasn't so bad." I haven't pushed myself like that in a long time. Well really not in my adult life have I worked that hard at my physical conditioning. I had some pretty tough days, especially some of those 440/880 days. I can tell my fitness has really improved over these 12 weeks.

Well what do I do now? I haven't really decided on another schedule. I would be happy with just starting over with the one I just finished but I would like to keep pushing just a bit harder. I've got a 5k on April 10th and an 8k on May 1st. I would love to see some improvement in race times. I want to run at least one race a month for the rest of the year. At the beginning of the year I told myself that I needed to start running a few 10k races but haven't decided on any just yet. Of course there is the Cotton Row. I could run that, I just haven't committed. Now that I look at the calendars of local racing clubs I don't see very many local 10k races for the rest of the year. I'll get to one of them.

One thing I did learn: DO NOT go to long on a pair of shoes. I went almost 500 miles and almost 8 months on one pair. My legs were getting sore, really sore, after every run. Got a new pair and the soreness stopped. Maybe every 3 months would be better or even sooner now that I'm doing more miles per week.

Another thing learned: If you just try you can get it done. That's my biggest hold up. I talk myself out of things before starting because I don't want to fail. Seems kind of silly I know. It's one of those character flaws that just gets tougher the older I get. How do you know you'll fail if you've never tried? Yes, yes, I know. One thing I do know is that I've conquered a few fears/anxieties with my running so far and have a few more to go.

Another day with 400s

My brother-in-law was in town. I always invite him in on what I'm doing. He doesn't run but stays in really good shape by the nature of his work and he plays basketball every now and then.

On our last one we decided to let it all go. We started and before we had finished the first 100 Scott had already put 30-40 meters between us. Here I'm thinking I was in really good shape and here's this guy that doesn't run like I do. Humble pie! I did my best to catch him on the last 200 but just couldn't get there. It did result in my fastest 400 yet.

  1. 1:27
  2. 1:30
  3. 1:29
  4. 1:35
  5. 1:28
  6. 1:21

8 x 400

I had to do a double take when I looked at the schedule for today. I wondered if I had gotten it wrong and I started thinking it was 4 800s so I had to take another look.

As it turned out it wasn't so bad. There was no wind today which was a HUGE help. The temperature was about 60, another HUGE plus.

Stats:

  1. 1:39
  2. 1:34
  3. 1:37
  4. 1:35
  5. 1:35
  6. 1:36
  7. 1:39
  8. 1:34
I was really happy with #8. My body didn't feel like I was improving over #7.

It always feels good to get those out of the way.

Great morning for 10 miles

The temperature was still quite cool but didn't seem as bad.

It was just me and Eric running this morning with Lanier following on his bike.

I felt really good for about 6 miles and then my legs got really heavy and I wanted to stop. We did have a brief stop because of cars and the restart felt terrible. We really slowed down in the last 2 miles.

It's definitely time for some new shoes. I'm heading to Fleet Feet of Huntsville tomorrow for a shiny new pair. I'm pretty close to 500 miles on my current pair.
